Aspen’s Laid-back Side

A more casual alternative to the glitz and glamour of nearby Aspen, Snowmass is a perfect ski destination for families with children—its mountain offers more than 3,000 acres of green and blue runs. Plus, it’s earned the title of second-most vertical feet of skiing of any area in the U.S. At Snowmass’ Base Village, ice skate at the outdoor rink or savor a meal at one of the many restaurants. The village's casual dress code extends to all facets of the town, especially in the off-season, as locals bike to festival concerts, sip a margarita on an outdoor patio after rock climbing near Independence Pass, or grab an early dinner on the way home from a hike.

Like any Colorado mountain destination, plan for anything: at more than 8,000 feet elevation, the weather can be unpredictable. Summers, though, tend to be warm and dry with chilly evenings, while fall offers a welcome cool and bursts of color from the area’s iconic aspen trees.
