To the discerning golfer, it’s no secret that Hilton Head Island is the paramount South Carolina golf destination. At just over 42 square miles, the island is home to more than 20 first-class courses architected by some of golf’s legendary course designers, including Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., George Fazio and Pete Dye. It’s also home to a PGA Tour Event, RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links.
If you are planning where to stay, Palmetto Dunes Resort is an excellent choice, offering spacious, secluded villas just a short walk to the beach and within easy reach of three championship golf courses. While all three courses are exceptional, Palmetto Dunes locals recommend playing George Fazio and Robert Trent Jones’s masterpieces.
The Fazio Course is challenging – even for the most expert golfers – ranking among the nation’s top 100 courses by Golf Digest. With 6,873 yards (from the tips) of bunker-ridden fairways, positioning your drives with length and precision is the only way to put together a low round.
If you enjoy navigating tree-lined fairways and imposing water hazards, the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course is a true delight. Its signature par-5, 550-yard 10th hole has gorgeous, sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean from the green. The Robert Trent Jones course is perhaps the most beautiful 18 holes on the island, so be sure to bring your camera.
Hilton Head Island brings you some of the best golf and Southern hospitality the Southeast has to offer. So get out there this season. And most importantly, hit ‘em well.
