But one lake stands above all others for its sheer beauty and elegance \u2014 Lake Como<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like an upside-down Y piercing the Alps, Lake Como is narrow, deep and decorated with some of Italy’s most extravagant villas. From Pliny the Elder to George Clooney, it has\u00a0appealed to the powerful, famous and insatiable for more than 2,000 years. A big part of the lake’s draw stems from its mixture of alpine grandeur (after all, Switzerland is just over the ridge) and Mediterranean balminess. Palms, cypress and chestnut trees line the shore, while snowcapped peaks loom in the distance. It’s beautifully confusing and\u00a0unmistakably Italian.<\/p>\n

Lake Como Travel Basics<\/h2>\n

Getting there:\u00a0<\/em>Lake Como is located a mere 31\u00a0miles\u00a0north of Milan. Milan Malpensa is the closest international airport.<\/p>\n

Varenna<\/h3>\n

Quieter than Bellagio but equally appealing, Varenna is the most photogenic village on the lake. In fact, arriving in Varenna by boat is one of Northern Italy’s most dramatic\u00a0experiences. Tucked under a castle-crowned hill,\u00a0the buildings of the town\u00a0center\u00a0are\u00a0decorated in\u00a0caramel, lemon, and peachy colors, with the wizard-hat\u00a0campanile<\/em>\u00a0of the Church of\u00a0San Giorgio rising above it all.\u00a0Walk along La Passerella, the romantic arch-covered walkway that enters the town, and enjoy an afternoon noshing on small plates at an outdoor cafe. It is ridiculously easy to forget your worries in Varenna.<\/p>\n

Villages and Villas of Ramo di Como<\/h3>\n

The villages and villas that line the western\u00a0branch of Lake Como \u2014 known as the Ramo di Como \u2014 are the definition of elegance and beauty. Best experienced by private boat or in a convertible driving down the SS340, the villages can be combined for a memorable afternoon. Start in Menaggio and proceed down the length of the shore with stops at Villa Carlotta, Lenno,\u00a0Villa del Balbianello, Brienno (a contender along with Varenna for the prettiest village on the lake) and finally, a Franciacorta toast (Italy\u2019s Champagne counterpart) and dinner at the world-famous Villa d’Este in Cernobbio.<\/p>\n

Tucked against the southwestern corner\u00a0of the lake, the city of Como is world-famous for its silk production and continues to supply many of nearby Milan’s most prestigious fashion houses. But there is more to Como than just silk. Take a leisurely stroll through\u00a0the city’s\u00a0ancient quarter (Citt\u00e0 Murata), ride the funicular up to Brunate for dazzling views and an aperitif. Feast your eyes upon the magnificent Duomo, which features Gothic, Renaissance and late-Baroque architecture.<\/p>\n
