Location

You can fly directly to Vail/Eagle County Airport (EGE) with nonstop service from 11 cities providing connections from virtually anywhere in North America. Eagle/Vail Airport is only 30 minutes from Vail via convenient Colorado Mountain Express van service, rental car through Avis, our club partner, or transportation arranged by your concierge. Denver International Airport (DEN) is a scenic, 2.5-hour drive via I-70 and up to Vail Pass.

Love Vail, Not the Mill Creek Room

We love Colorado in the fall, and the end of September proved perfect timing in terms of the Aspens turning. It was stunning. We stayed in the Mill Creek Room at the Sonnenalp. The hotel is beautiful, and a perfect location, with a great restaurant and spa. And, the service is outstanding. However, our room did not have a balcony large enough to sit outside on and take in the views while sipping coffee in the morning, or a cocktail in the evening. The bedroom was on the second floor and the bathroom/living area was downstairs, which we were aware of when we booked it, but, we figured out quickly that this is not for us! The room upstairs has a rather low ceiling, and it just created a "cramped" environment. I am sure this hotel offers other rooms, and I would be willing to return to it, I'd just opt for a larger room, all on one floor!

Sonnenalp stay in Vail

We loved the hotel, great customer service the location was perfect. Unfortunately, our specific room was sub par. The water pressure and temperature varied significantly and constantly. The shower door opening was so small that both my husband and I had to squeeze in. We were not aware that the bathroom was downstairs and the bedroom was upstairs. So to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, we had to navigate down and up. We changed rooms but unfortunately it was the same room type. Our friends had a standard one level room and it was perfect for $100 less per night! So we would definitely stay at Sonnenalp again but not in that specific room type.

Nice suite in prime location

We enjoyed the fantastic property, staff and location of Sonnenalp. Loved being able to walk through the village with ease. There was so much activity right outside the resort. The only slight drawback of this particular suite is that the loft bedroom is not on the same floor as the lovely bathroom. Not a big deal, but not a 5/5. The breakfast buffet is wonderful—don’t miss it.

Beautiful, but old, property in Vail village

The Sonnenalp is a beautiful, albeit older, hotel in East Vail Village. We’ve stayed here a few times and generally had a good time. It’s not a 5/5 for a few simple reasons, but having said this it’s still a perfectly nice place. 
Ludwig’s is their breakfast restaurant, $54 per person for an extensive buffet, coffee and juices included, opens at 7am. First chair is 8:30, so this doesn’t leave much time for a leisurely meal if you’re trying to get out on the slopes early. The strangest part of the Ludwig’s experience is they ask if you have a reservation, and if you don’t you get an odd reaction from the hostess. Also they seat tables one by one starting not a single second before 7:00.00 so if there’s a line, it could actually be 8-10 minutes, not a huge deal, also not helping w first chair. 
Our room, Mill Creek Suite, was as described. I mentioned this is an older hotel so the Heat / AC isn’t great, it’s difficult to balance between the two floors and there is a noticeable difference between the two. The age of the property really shows when you get close to the windows, single pane / not insulated. Again, not a huge deal, but noticeable and when competing w the newer places in the village even more noticeable. The strangest omission is the is no vent fan in the bathroom, not the shower or toilet area, extrapolate from that as you choose. An obvious strength was the staff. From valet to from desk to the ski conceirge, they were wonderful, attentive and professional. If you’ve stayed at Solaris and enjoyed that level of service you won’t experience a decline at the Sonnenalp. 
We will probably end up there again, however at approx $250 after tip (group of 4) for breakfast and some of these other little picky items the Solaris or other non Inspirato properties aren’t much more expensive at all.

Too cramped

Unit consists of hallways, staircase and a huge bathroom. Leaves no space to live and relax. Had to juggle room service breakfast on a tiny coffee table. It’s just not what anyone expects a Vail experience to be. The staff was nice. The bed was very comfortable. The location was great. We just didn’t realize the living space would feel so cramped and we did everything we could to get out of the unit until bedtime.
