With its imposing size and venomous bite, the Komodo dragon is aptly named. The largest living lizard in the world can only be found on a handful of Indonesian islands—making it a true bucket-list sighting for adventurous travelers. In June 2026, 43 such adventurous travelers flew to Bali, then set sail for our Inspirato Only Bali & Komodo Island Yacht Cruise. Our final destination: Labuan Bajo. Our mission: to encounter real-life dragons up close—or from a safe distance, at least.
Meeting in Bali
After arriving at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), we transferred to Andaz Bali, a resort so stunning that many members wished they had arrived a few days early. We spent time strolling through Sanur, exploring its boutiques and restaurants, before gathering at the beachfront Fisherman’s Club for a welcome dinner. Over canapés and cocktails, members mingled, trading stories and excitement for the Komodo Islands journey ahead.
Exploring the Komodo Islands
The following day, we boarded the Aqua Blu, a former naval vessel beautifully transformed into a one-of-a-kind luxury expedition yacht. As the sun set, we began our seven-day voyage, cruising through the Komodo Islands’ ever-changing landscape.
Our first stop was Moyo Island, home to small fishing villages and abundant wildlife. After swimming in crystal-clear waters and hiking to Mata Jitu, known locally as Princess Diana’s waterfall, we gathered on the secluded shores of Amanwana Resort for a private Inspirato Only celebration.
Our journey took us next to Satonda and Saleh Bay, where we swam alongside whale sharks. That evening, our Balinese Sunset Soirée featured cocktails, canapés, and the unforgettable sight of thousands of bats taking flight at dusk, viewed from the top deck of the Aqua Blu. We then visited Gili Banta and the bay of Batu Moncho on Komodo Island; Rinca, where we enjoyed an Indonesian cooking demonstration and diving; the Rainbow Reef of Tatawa Besar; and Gili Lawa.
The Wildlife of Indonesia
Each day brought unforgettable encounters with Indonesia’s extraordinary wildlife. Members snorkeled alongside manta rays, sea turtles, reef sharks, cuttlefish, and countless colorful reef fish, while whale sharks made an appearance alongside the ship. On land, monkeys and water buffalo were spotted roaming the islands.
Of course, the Komodo dragons were the stars of this show—and they did not disappoint. Like the rest of the animals we encountered in the Komodo Islands, they made their presence known without hesitation. They lounged freely throughout Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, more than willing to pose for photos. Some even ventured into the water, which was a thrill to witness.
Evenings aboard the Aqua Blu were just as memorable. Members gathered on the swim deck for gourmet dinners and enjoyed Inspirato Only events like our Waves of White Party and Trivia Night. Thoughtful touches—including custom rash guards gifted at the start of the voyage and personalized cards at the end—made the experience even more meaningful.
