When Inspirato member Sharon Watt was looking for a way to celebrate her 40th birthday, she thought a trip to Nashville would be a fun getaway for her family of four.

But when it became clear that her husband and two kids, ages 8 and 11, were a little less than enthused about their Tennessee destination, inspiration for a quick change of plans struck in an Inspirato Jaunt email. Sharon saw that Newport Beach, California, was one of the featured destinations, and that a stay in a home there would be comparable to what they’d be paying to stay in a hotel room.

Her husband’s interest was piqued as soon as she mentioned Newport, she said.

“He was like, ‘So you’re telling me we’re going from Nashville, in a … hotel room, to a whole house in California?’” she said.

Sharon quickly made moves to shift their travel plans, putting in calls to Inspirato and United. She ended up booking Admiral, one-half of a duplex that’s just two blocks from the beach and boardwalk, for five nights.

A week later, the Watts were flying into LAX to soak in the California sunshine. And upon arriving at Admiral, Sharon knew they’d made the right choice for her celebratory birthday week.

Everything was just very well done: classy, cool, modern, but not over the top. Even the orange (front) door; just the little subtle pops of color.

Throughout the week, the Watts rented bikes and explored Newport, spent plenty of time on the beach, watched sunsets, surfed (her husband and son), got their nails done (she and her daughter), and went to Balboa Island, a little harborside community just a 20-minute drive from their Inspirato home.

Sharon said they also enjoyed just lounging around the house, from making their own breakfast each morning to catching some sun on the home’s rooftop deck.

“The rooftop was amazing. It got a little chilly at night, but we did go up there and put the fire on and watch a show,” she said. “The kids were on the couch in their big robes—they were so cute.”

Watt normally prefers to be the planner on her trips, but decided to take a step back this time and let the Newport Destination Concierge, Whitney, cover the itinerary, a refreshing change of pace for her.

“Whitney (the Destination Concierge) there was so lovely. She was always checking in with us, showed us all around, and gave us a wonderful itinerary,” Watt said. “She gave us ideas and said, ‘Use them or don’t,’ but it was just so nice to have local recommendations.”

Whitney even left Sharon some gifts for her birthday: a picnic blanket, cheese plate, and Corkcicle for keeping wine chilled on the go, all of which she was excited to put to use on the trip.

And for other Inspirato members visiting Newport, Sharon implores them to rent bikes to conveniently explore the beachside city, and to check out Sancho’s Tacos—a tasty recommendation from Whitney.

Summing up the week, Sharon said that what started as a last-minute Jaunt trip quickly became one of the best that she and her family have ever taken with Inspirato.

“It was really just … kind of perfect, and a perfect celebration for my 40th. The week really couldn’t have been better,” she said. “It was a well-rounded trip for our family.”
