The Danube River has played a pivotal role throughout Europe’s history—and you’ll be following its path if you’re joining us aboard the S.S. Maria Theresa for the Danube River Cruise 2019. (P.S. There are still staterooms available.)

Whether you’re setting sail with us or exploring Central Europe on another Inspirato trip, we hope these tips and ideas will get you feeling excited and inspired for your journey.

What to read

Touted as “Little Women meets Amadaeus,” Marrying Mozart tells the tale of the four Weber sisters—one of whom would eventually become his wife—and their relationship with the famed composer. This historical character study definitely takes some liberties with the timeline of a young Wolfgang Mozart’s life, but it paints a rich portrait of an 18th-century Vienna filled with the art and music for which it’s renowned.

What to listen to

We’ve curated a playlist of tunes to get you in the mood for your adventure through Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Because the region is a cradle for classical music, you’ll find selections from Mozart, Schubert, and Strauss—and you may even recognize a few numbers from The Sound of Music. Enjoy while you pack or in your stateroom once aboard the S.S. Maria Theresa.

What to drink

Elderflower and its berries grow in abundance throughout Austria, and in the Hugo, it shines. This cocktail, first popularized in Italy’s South Tyrol region just over the Austrian border, has spread throughout Central Europe as a refreshing summer treat—but we think it works just as well in the fall, too. Combine a cup of Prosecco, a tablespoon of elderflower syrup, and a splash of soda water, then garnish with a few mint leaves and slices of lime.

What to eat

Hungarian meals have been known for their heartiness and heaviness, but over the past decade, Budapest has enjoyed a culinary revolution. On your free day to explore this historic city, make a stop at the Michelin-starred Borkonyha Winekitchen Restaurant, which has helped pave the way in the city’s trend toward lighter, healthier fare. There, inventive dishes are prepared with artistic flourish; try the dégustation menu for a sampling of the best that Borkonyha has to offer.

What to pack

Central Europe in October typically sees highs in the high 50s, cooling to mid- to low 40s by nighttime. Layers are always advisable—especially a raincoat or jacket—and make for the most sensible pieces to have on hand. Pair light sweaters with comfortable, waterproof boots for exploring cobblestone streets.

We hope you’re feeling inspired for a European adventure, and whether or not you’re joining us on the Danube, it’s never too early to start thinking about Inspirato’s 2020 cruise offerings. We hope to see you aboard!
