Planning a family vacation to Lake Tahoe this winter? Look to the north end of the lake: Squaw Valley and Northstar California resorts offer a variety of kid-friendly activities for Inspirato members and their families beyond hitting the slopes.
Aerial Tram Rides
Enjoying the beauty of Squaw Valley doesn’t require skis and a lift—open year-round to foot passengers, the aerial tram takes riders a breathtaking 2,000 feet up the mountain to High Camp. Enjoy the splendid view over lunch at the Terrace Restaurant & Bar. As an added bonus, kids can enjoy an indoor 30-foot climbing wall at the tram’s base, as well as Sky Jump, where a two-point harness and bungees give kids a safe and fun way to practice their backflips.
What kid doesn’t love zipping downhill on an inner tube? The tubing center at Northstar offers a 200-yard run with a few banked turns for added thrills. A tow-lift brings families back up to the top for as many runs as they can squeeze into an hour. And it’s best to get there early: Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Lake Tahoe is one of the best destinations in North America for snowshoeing. A great form of exercise and way to enjoy the serenity of nature, introduce the kids to this peaceful activity with a Northstar snowshoe tour. Nighttime stargazing tours are also available, ending with hot chocolate and s’mores at The Village at Northstar.
Kids can dart and glide across the ice at The Resort at Squaw Creek’s ice skating rink while taking in stunning views of Squaw Valley’s six peaks. And no need to pack the skates: The rink rents out helmets and both hockey and figure skates. Plus, kids can skate together while participating in Squaw Creek’s Mountain Buddies program—a year-round camp that lets kids meet each other through fun, daily activities of their choice (all monitored by an adult, of course).
Another great option for young kids and toddlers lies in Truckee, the small town between Northstar and Squaw Valley. Here, the Kidzone Museum offers exploration areas, nature programs, art studio space, indoor play spaces, and other ways to engage young minds. The baby area is perfect for little crawlers.
