    Bliss in Belize

We had never been to Belize before but it had been lurking on our list for years. We're in Houston and it's easy to get there - 2.5 hours into Belize City and then a 30 min puddle jumper into Placencia where Turtle Inn is located.

Turtle Inn is one of the Coppola Family Hideaway properties run by famed film director Francis Ford Coppola and his family and it is simple, elegant and delightful. The staff are very friendly, the cottages are comfortable and well-appointed, and the food is excellent.

The beach right at the resort is a bit gravelly but is level and pristine and a great place to lounge, hit the water or sway in a hammock. It's also nice and quiet. An easy 10-15 min walk down the beach will put you on a sandy beach with small places where you can grab a beer and some food. Very nice as well but more crowded.

We did three excursions from the resort but other than that we just chilled in the host of quiet places to chill on-property.

Excursion 1 was a half-day reef fishing expedition which was tremendous. The experienced guides (Kennedy and Arjeff) consistently put us onto fish and we boated 22 fish in our 4 hours on the water. Barracuda / Mackerel / Yellow Jack / Yellowtail Snapper / Mutton Snapper. Amazing. Back at the resort, we sold some of our fish to the chef, took a few for ourselves to have the chef prepare them for lunch, and gave the rest to our guides. One of the fish we had prepared was the barracuda after the guides said it was their favorite fish. They were right - it was terrific and the Turtle Inn kitchen prepared it perfectly.

Excursion 2 was a sunset cruise on a vintage wooden boat on the lagoon off the backside of the property. Lovely.

Excursion 3 was a trip to a chocolate farm where we got to see the "orchard" where the cacao trees were nestled into the surrounding forest that gives them protection from the sun. A docent took us thru the growth cycle, harvest, cleaning, drying process before shifting to the location where the sun-dried beans are roasted and ground into paste. We got to do some grinding and tasting and buying at this location. On our way back to the resort we stopped for an hour at a beautiful waterfall for a swim and a light snack.

All-in-all, the whole experience was just right for us and we didn't even do any snorkeling / scuba diving - which, of course, is a big draw in Belize but we did hear people talking about how amazing their snorkeling excursion was. Next time.

Paradise and our new home away from home

We visited Turtle Inn in late January 2021 for a week and loved it so much we booked our next trip back in late February - only one month later!

The resort is in a beautiful, quiet location. We had a beachfront cottage - luxurious and literally only 4-5 steps from the water with a wonderful breeze coming off the ocean. The wave lulled us to sleep every night.

Every single person on staff offers genuine, 5 star service. Everyone knew our name and treated us like gold and made us feel like we were long time friends.

The food in the restaurants is fantastic. We have now spent 2 weeks there and never one felt the need to even eat anywhere else. We are wine lovers and for a small resort, their wine cellar is phenomenal. While it is primarily Coppola wines, they have such a wide variety that lovers of any wines will find multiple favorites. For red wine lovers we highly recommend the Eleanor or the Archimedes. It is of note that they do not mark the wines up that much compared to other resorts or restaurants.

While it is a sleepy village, there is no shortage of things to do. We did excursions to some mayan ruins, a very adventurous cave swim/hike, and swam with giant sea turtles, eagle rays, and nurse sharks at Silk Caye and enjoyed colorful coral and myriad fish at Laughing Bird Caye. Many of the people we spoke with enjoyed the bird watching and all of the guides are friendly and knowledgeable.

There is no internet in the rooms but there are several good spots to work.access wifi if needed. There is also no air conditioning in the rooms which we had no problem with because of the cool breeze coming in off the ocean everyday but I could see that being a challenge for some people, especially if you stay during the hotter summer months. For our stays during January and Feb/March it was not a problem at all.

Overall, this is now one of our favorite Inspirato destinations and we will return a 3rd, 4th 5th and many more times if we can!
