Beginning the Journey in Tokyo

The Best of Japan began in Tokyo, where members were welcomed into a city that perfectly blends history with innovation. Each day offered a fresh perspective on the capital’s culture and energy. Members took part in a sumo wrestling demonstration and joined a sushi-making class led by a Tokyo-based chef. Guided tours revealed hidden gems throughout the city, while time in Ginza and Omotesando provided upscale shopping and stylish exploration.

A highlight of Tokyo was a private tea ceremony hosted by Mr. Funakoshi, a master of the Urasenke Sado tradition. Held inside his personal residence in the Meguro district—a serene architectural retreat not typically open to the public—this experience offered members a rare glimpse into one of Japan’s most refined and meaningful rituals. In a peaceful and intimate setting, members were guided through the ceremony, enjoying seasonal sweets alongside the tea, while gaining insight into the quiet elegance and deep tradition that define this art form.

Finding Peace and Beauty in Hakone

After the energy of Tokyo, the journey continued to Hakone, a tranquil retreat known for its natural hot springs and sweeping views of Mount Fuji. This peaceful mountain town offered a change of pace, where members could relax and recharge surrounded by Japan’s natural beauty.

One of the most memorable moments in Hakone was seeing Mount Fuji in rare clarity. On a crisp, clear morning, the group enjoyed unobstructed views of the iconic peak rising over Lake Ashi, a truly breathtaking sight. Members also experienced the therapeutic waters of private onsens and visited the Hakone Open-Air Museum, where contemporary sculptures are set against forested hills and open skies.

Hakone brought a sense of serenity and connection to nature, offering a quiet moment of reflection amid the richness of the overall journey.

Embracing Culture in Kyoto

In Kyoto, tradition guided the pace of each day. Members visited iconic temples, strolled through manicured gardens, and admired the quiet beauty of ancient alleyways. A highlight of this leg of the journey was an evening that began with each member being gifted a traditional yukata. With the help of expert attendants, everyone was dressed for an elegant private dinner that featured a live geisha performance. Guests had the opportunity to speak with the geishas after their performance, gaining rare insight into their stories and the significance of their role in Japanese culture.

The Kyoto experience extended beyond the city. Members ventured to nearby Nara, where they explored Tōdai-ji, one of the oldest and most historically significant temples in Japan. Inside, the Daibutsu—an enormous bronze Buddha—stood as a powerful reminder of the country’s spiritual heritage. Just outside, members met the famous Nara deer, known for their gentle bows and deep connection to the land’s Shinto traditions.

Back in Kyoto, the journey took a flavorful turn with a private sake tasting and brewery tour. Led by a local sake maker, the tasting featured six regional varieties and a guided walk through the brewing process. The experience connected members with the craftsmanship, ritual, and cultural significance of Japan’s iconic national beverage.

A Flavorful Finale in Osaka

The final dinner brought everyone together with live music, laughter, and reflections on an incredible shared experience.

As the evening closed, our local host offered a heartfelt farewell with the word “Jaamata,” which means “see you again.” It was the perfect ending to The Best of Japan.
