A trend of responsible and sustainable travel is on the rise, helmed by those trying to stay conscious of their impact on the environment as they explore the world. In honor of Earth Day, we’ve compiled five eco-friendly hotels or resort brands in the Inspirato Collection perfect for members trying to reduce their eco footprint; each is committed to utilizing sustainable practices in its own way.

An upscale subsidiary of the overarching Hyatt brand, Andaz is known for its luxe boutique residences. But the brand is also a leader in eco-friendly business practices. In March 2018, Andaz Maui partnered with Pacific Biodiesel—a Hawaiian clean-energy company—to use oil from fields of sunflowers that Pacific Biodiesel planted. Andaz Maui then uses the sunflower oil in dishes at its onsite restaurant, giving the excess back to Pacific Biodiesel to be made into fuel.

Aman’s resorts are built to blend into their surroundings using natural materials like sandstone, evoking a harmony between the properties and the natural world. The brand’s U.S. resorts—Amangani and Amangiri—source meats and produce locally for their farm-to-table restaurants, and both implement recycling and energy-saving programs.

1 Hotels

Lauded by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, this hotel chain is more than just trendy; it was founded on the principle of honoring nature and the world around us. 1 Hotels are constructed using purely natural and reclaimed elements, and feature botanical installations meant to help guests breathe easier. CEO and Chairman Barry Sternlicht hopes the brand can be “a philosophy and platform for change.” Inspirato members can see the initiatives for themselves at 1 Hotels in Central Park, Brooklyn, and South Beach.

Carneros Resort and Spa

With rolling vineyards and picturesque countryside as the property’s backdrop, Carneros Resort and Spa acknowledges its privilege of residing in Napa Valley and works to protect its local community. The eco-friendly resort has dedicated itself to celebrate nature, community, and culture, and is a proud member of Beyond Green—properties who meet more than 50 sustainability indicators. Carneros implements a variety of conservation practices to promote “gentler travel” including natural ventilation throughout the resort, complimentary bicycles for guests, and 100% compostable coffee packs.

Palmaïa, The House of Aïa

Nestled on the Mexican Caribbean and lined with white-sand beaches, this progressive retreat lives in complete harmony with its natural surroundings. Palmaïa, The House of Aïa strives to become one of the first carbon-neutral resorts in the world, with the wellness respite’s foundation built on a vision “founded in the confidence that there is a better way to do things, for ourselves, for the children, for the planet.” The eco-friendly retreat implements a planet-first approach, already using 50% less energy than the average resort, and partakes in sustainable initiatives including abstention from plastic bottle use and mangrove protection.
