About Big Sky, Montana

Gateway to Adventure in the Northern Rockies

Montana is known as Big Sky Country, and nowhere is that name more fitting than in the town of Big Sky itself, where big blue skies and the rocky peaks of the Gallatin Range dominate the scenery. Home to nine national forests, Big Sky is a beacon for outdoor recreation, particularly hiking, fishing, and whitewater rafting. It’s just an hour’s drive from the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park, renowned for its geysers and abundant wildlife. Visit in the colder months to zoom down the blissfully crowd-free slopes of Big Sky Resort, the second-largest ski resort in the U.S. with 6,000 acres of skiable terrain and 300 runs across four mountains.

Forecasting Your Big Sky Vacation

Big Sky enjoys an average of around 400 inches of snow each year and January tends to be the snowiest month. Springtime sees snowstorms and thunderstorms mixed in with warm, sunny days and many local businesses close temporarily at this time. The resort thrives again in the summer, when temperatures regularly reach the 60s and 70s. Big Sky is rarely crowded by standard ski-resort definitions, but you can expect peak crowds from Thanksgiving through April (the general ski season) and again from June through September.
