Just over 8 miles long, this local-favorite hike passes Breck’s most gorgeous alpine lakes and the impressive Continental Falls. Keep an eye out for an old mining cabin and what’s left of an old cable car along the trail.
A former gold rush boomtown dating back to 1859, Breckenridge is an unassuming gem along Colorado’s I-70 corridor. Like many surrounding ski towns, Breck (as locals call it) reinvented itself as a hub of outdoor recreation in the 1960s and ‘70s. Skiers and snowboarders flock to this winter playground for four terrain parks and 187 trails (suitable for all skill levels) spread across five peaks. Tourists come for the charming Main Street, where Victorian-era buildings now house boutiques, art galleries, lively restaurants, and cozy coffee shops. Breckenridge retains an approachable, mountain-town feel, unlike the posher ski towns of Aspen and Vail.
During ski season, expect plenty of bluebird days interspersed with big winter snowstorms that dump feet of fresh powder. Temperatures often fluctuate from the high teens to the low 30s. Summer brings warm, sunny days with highs in the 60s and 70s and lows in the 50s. Fall is a great, off-peak season time to visit with crisp temperatures and gorgeous foliage.
