Formed thousands of years ago by volcanic activity, the Marietas
Islands are a National Preserve from which humans are banned.
Wildlife such as the Blue Footed Booby is allowed, as is viewing
the island by boat -- a bird-watcher's dream.
Annual releases of sea turtles and their offspring draw visitors
to the Riviera Nayarit area, including Punta de Mita. Sea turtle
releases occur from July to December every year on beaches
throughout the region and can be seen on your own or with a
guide.
Punta de Mita offers world-class deep-sea fishing with a bounty
of snapper, grouper, roosterfish and mahi mahi. Once you've reeled
in the big one, ask a local restaurant to cook your catch for a
true ocean-to-table experience.
Whale season in this area is typically December through March,
when the humpback whales come south to give birth. Many adventure
guides offer whale-watching tours that get you up close, and often
you'll see mothers with their young.
Punta de Mita provides easy access to several beachside towns,
as well as the larger city of Puerto Vallarta. Head to Sayulita to
get a feel for Mexican surf culture, then over to San Blas to
explore the mangrove swamps and crocodile reserve.
A remote fishing village in Banderas Bay, Yelapa is accessible
only by boat; take a water taxi and spend the day on the golden
sand. Try Raicilla (the local moonshine) and indulge in a
piece of pie, made fresh daily and delivered to the beach.
Punta de Mita is the Mexico you thought didn't exist any longer. Punta de Mita bathes visitors in warmth and sunshine year round,
with frequent showers from June through October. Enjoy moderate
