Location

The Fairmont Orchid is located on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The resort is 23 miles north of the Kona International Airport (KOA) and it’s an easy, 25-minute drive. The hotel’s concierge can help with ground transportation; however, you may want to rent a car to take full advantage of everything the island of Hawaii has to offer. We recommend renting a car through Club partner Avis. Inspirato members receive exclusive benefits through the invitation-only Avis President’s Club.

Huge Room & Incredible Views

We greatly enjoyed the Oceanfront King Suite at The Fairmont Orchid for our weeklong vacation. We combined it with a connecting double and had a huge amount of space for our family of 4. The patio off of the living room of the suite is enormous and right on the ocean with incredible views of the sea and beach.

The resort itself is nice with a causal, laid-back atmosphere. The breakfast restaurant is very good and Brown's Restaurant is also a great experience with seaside tables, firepits, and live music.

We did find the beach to be a bit disappointing. It's very small and rocky (which I guess is normal for the Big Island), but good for snorkeling. Just watch out for the sea urchins which are abundant. We prefer the bigger, white sand beaches of Maui or Oahu, but wanted to try the Big Island this trip.

Luxury, Beauty, and Warmth on the Kohala Coast

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Fairmont Orchid on the Gold Floor. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm, attentive, and consistently exceptional. The Gold Floor amenities elevated our experience, offering thoughtful perks and a sense of relaxed luxury throughout our stay.

The property itself is breathtaking—immaculately maintained grounds, lush tropical landscaping, and serene views that feel like paradise at every turn. The harmony between the natural beauty of the island and the careful attention to detail in the resort's design creates an atmosphere that is both tranquil and inspiring.

Every element of our visit felt curated to perfection, and we left with cherished memories of both the people and the place. We would return in a heartbeat and wholeheartedly recommend the Fairmont Orchid to anyone seeking a refined yet welcoming Hawaiian escape.

Fairmont Orchid - Amazing

The property and staff were amazing. We were extremely pleased with every aspect of our stay. We did end up upgrading on property... We wanted something better than the angled ocean view after seeing the view from the room, and the front desk worked with us for a reasonable charge to upgrade the room. Would be great if we could book that room directly through Inspirato. We would definitely go back.

Resort Disappointment

While my family thoroughly enjoyed our Hawaiian vacation, we were largely disappointed with the Fairmont Orchid overall. The Gold Level rooms had recently been refreshed - we had no issues with the rooms and were pleased with them and the Gold Level Lounge. However, the resort overall is in desperate need of a refresh or complete overhaul. Our biggest issues were with the beach and pool setups. While the setting is wonderful, the Fairmont does not provide a luxury experience in this area. The beach was outfitted with extremely basic plastic lounge chairs and no beach umbrellas, leaving us baking in the sun if we wanted to be on the beach while our kids enjoyed the water. Similarly, the lounge chairs at the pool are old and dirty. Stained chair covers and towels didn't help matters. Food and beverage service was barely passable; but as an example, expensive cocktails were served in paper cups. Again, not a luxury experience. There were multiple occasions where we waited 30 minutes plus for the hotel shuttle, repeatedly being told it was on the way to never show. This was indicative of the overall level of service we experienced from the hotel. We had friends staying next door at the Auberge Mauna Lani so we were able to have a real-time point of comparison, and there is no comparison. Mauna Lani (previously an option through Inspirato) is what I would have expected from an Inspirato property. While the natural beauty of its setting makes for a wonderful vacation, the Fairmont Orchid falls woefully short.

Paid significantly more than the available rate

Clearly Inspirato can't control for price changes but we paid $1200 per night for a room that is currently going for $650. Not sure how there is such a hug discrepancy. The room was nice, not amazing, and definitely not big enough for a family of four. The resort is beautiful, especially the lagoon. Likely will not book hotels again through Inspirato.
