Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Stop by the LGBT Visitor Center in South Beach for locals’ recommendations on things to do and see. For partiers, Miami and South Beach are notorious for their buzzing nightlife and offer dozens of fabulous bars and clubs for dancing. Of course, no visit to Florida is complete without plenty of beach time. 12th Street Beach in Miami and Sebastian Street Beach in nearby Fort Lauderdale are gay meccas.
San Francisco, California
San Francisco is arguably the LGBTQ capital of the United States, having been deemed the country’s best city for gay travel by Travel + Leisure. The Castro District is the city’s LGBTQ headquarters, boasting an abundance of bars and clubs, the GLBT History Museum, landmarks such as the Castro Theater and Harvey Milk Plaza, and even rainbow-striped crosswalks.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
In 2001, The Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. Amsterdam is the country’s LGBTQ epicenter and hosted the 2016 Europride festival, one of the largest pride events in the world (2017’s fest will happen in Madrid, Spain). Sydney is home to a large, diverse, and active LGBTQ population. The annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras – held each year beginning the second Thursday in February and ending on the first Saturday of March – attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to its lavish parade, festival, and special events.
