Location

Thompson Zihuatanejo is just a quick 45-minute flight from Mexico City and a 15-minute drive from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH). It is possible to find direct flights to ZIH from Canada and the U.S., especially during the peak vacation season between December and April. Unless you are planning a trip more than 50 miles out of town, we don’t recommend renting a car, as taxis are easy to come by.

Lovely room and views

We enjoyed the small size of the resort. The 2-bedroom suite was amazing for our group. The shared patio with a plunge pool was a great space to relax and enjoy the sunset. The included breakfasts were excellent.

The fitness center needs an update and the spa was not very robust, but the massages were very good.

Beautiful beach, suite and staff

The Thompson Suite was amazing. Right on the beach with a gorgeous patio connecting the 2 rooms. Beach was GORGEOUS. Staff was lovely. So friendly! Would definitely go again.

Great place in Mexico

We recently spent 4 nights at the Thompson Hotel in Zihuatanejo. This was our first time in this part of Mexico.

The city: I would definitely recommend traveling to Zihua. It felt very safe, the weather was perfect, the beach was one of the best I have been to, and the people throughout the area and resort were incredibly friendly.

Things to do: There was plenty to do from enjoying the beach, water activities, exploring, dining, etc.

The Thompson Hotel: The resort was very nice. I would consider it a 4 star hotel. It had some luxuries but not like some other hotels - like the Waldorff in Cabo. It was nice having breakfast included and the $100 credit. It was an interesting warm weather resort. It had pools, but there weren't chairs by the pools. Hardly anybody used the pools. The lounge chairs were on the beach facing the ocean. This was nice, but I do enjoy hanging out by pools as well. There are two restaurants at the hotel, but other than breakfast, we went to restaurants on the beach or in town. I would definitely recommend this.

We had a beach room with a plunge pool. The room was big and nice with a huge balcony facing he ocean and plunge pool. It was on the 2nd floor which I would recommend for the view. The only weird thing about the room is that the bed is on a platform that is a step up from the rest of the room. This could certainly cause issues for people getting up in the middle of the night or older people who not quite mobile.

I do recommend this vacation.

Great low-key getaway spot

My wife and I had a great time at the Thompson Hotel in Zihuatanejo. We are a bit nervous to travel to this destination due to the State Department travel advisory for the area, but when we arrived our concerns were quickly erased. They had visible staff/security on the beach at all times and we always felt completely comfortable. The hotel room is lovely and the service is excellent. We never waited long for drinks on the beach, food or anything else. The themed evenings were fun and always served up delicious meals. The Paella night main dish was amazing. The town was a quick 5-minute taxi ride away and the hotel always had them queued up, so you never had to wait for long. Perfect spot for a weekend getaway.
