Location

Fly into Kahului Airport (OGG), which is located on Maui near Haleakala. You'll generally connect through Honolulu to get there and many major airlines offer service.

One of the highlights of Maui is its variety; you might want to explore a new beach one day, a rainforest the next, and the road to Hana after that. We recommend renting a car through Club partner Avis for the freedom to explore in comfort.

Nice time at the Andaz

This is our third time staying at the Andaz. The unit could use some updated furniture as it is showing some wear but overall a nice place to stay. This unit has a nice ocean view and the queen bed in the third bedroom. Wish this room had an ensuite bath and was a little larger so our adult children would feel the had more similar rooms. The included breakfast is great and the 150 dollars per day is an nice perk and it rolls over each day so you don't have to use it all each day. It's a little hard to get pool chairs during the day but the hotel and location are hard to beat.

Andaz Wailea over Christmas

The villa was lovely. No complaints. The villa staff at the Andaz was very good, leaving us small treats each day leading up to Christmas. And they found an electric menorah for us to use while we were there, which was awesome.

The resort itself was nice, but oversubscribed, making it difficult to get chairs on the (relatively small) beach or by the pool. Evidently on Christmas Day every chair on the beach was claimed by 7:40 am. So we spent our time at the beach in the water or on towels on the unshaded sand. If you want be sure to find chairs by the pool, you evidently need to spring an extra $500 per day for a “cabana” - a few lounge chairs under a sun shade. Given the price we paid for the villa, this seemed a little like bilking, which I find annoying.

The included breakfast each day was copious and pretty good (not quite as good as at some other resorts we have stayed at in Hawaii). And the staff were very kind and attentive. A+ for the breakfast staff. Some mornings we had to wait up to 20-25 minutes for a breakfast table, again making us feel like we had chosen to vacation at an oversubscribed resort.

Dinner at Morimoto was very good and the service, again, was excellent. But hands down the best meal in Hawaii was our dinner at Mama’s Fish House. Highly recommend!

The entertainment at the luau was very good; the food less so, but I guess that is to be expected at a luau. I splurged for “premium settling” which was pretty outrageous but luaus are always overpriced, so I don’t really have any qualms there. What was disappointing was when I checked my bill I was charged $360 per person and was told that was the correct price when I enquired. Only after I pulled up my email from when I bought the tickets, showing a price of $340 per person, did theyoffer to reimburse the $80 overcharge (I guess I still paid the extra tax, but it wasn’t worth raising that as an issue).

Overall, it was December in Maui in a lovely villa, which can only be good. But we have enjoyed other resorts in Hawaii more (Mauna Kea on the big island is a favorite) and I think this was likely our one and only stay at the Andaz.
