Fresh Things to Do

Featured Activity

  • Wander in Pike Place Market

Opened more than 100 years ago, Pike Place Market is one of the oldest farmers markets in the country and hosts millions of visitors each year.

Catch a Flying Fish. Is it truly a storybook visit to Seattle without catching a giant fish in your arms? We think not. At the fish market, bystanders gather around market staff passing out samples to wait their turn in line to catch the famous fish in a wild toss across the counter.

Dine at the Athenian Inn. From barstools that have the honor of Tom Hanks' presence for the filming of Sleepless in Seattle to fresh Dungeness crab and craft beer in frosty mugs, the Athenian is the best spot to grab a bite and take in the expansive Puget Sound.

Skim, extra hot, no foam. At 102 Pike Street inside the market, the first Starbucks opened in 1971. Today the flagship store is LEED Gold-certified and all of the usual suspects are on the menu.

Fresh oysters at Emmett Watson's Oyster Bar. The first oyster bar in the city, this cozy eatery offers up the freshest oysters and fish and chips.

Travel Tips

  • Forecasting Your Seattle Vacation

Though the stereotypes of Seattle portray it as permanently drizzly and overcast, on average, the city actually receives less annual precipitation than many other American cities, including much of the East Coast. That said, you should expect to encounter some rain, especially during the winter, but this helps keep temperatures moderate year-round. Mild, breezy summers are the perfect time to visit.
