Location

The city of Milan has three airports: Milano Malpensa Airport (MXP) is about a 75-minute drive from Villa della Capra, while Milano Linate Airport (LIN) and Il Caravaggio “Orio al Serio” International Airport (BGY) are both about a 1 hour and 30 minute drive. Switzerland's Lugano Agno (LUG) regional airport is about a 1-hour drive. We strongly recommend hiring a private driver instead of renting a car.

Modern Luxury Meets Old World Charm

Having never been to Lake Como, our family was full of excitement, and Villa Della Capra did not disappoint! We chose this particular Villa primarily due to the layout and location in the heart of Lenno.

Villa Della Capra was originally part of an ancient church, so while the amenities and overall feel is modern luxury, the original stone accents that adorn the home add so much character and class.

Monica, the local Inspirato concierge, was a fantastic host and was always one step ahead of our needs, from grocery prep to taxi and ferry boat accommodations. With having four kids (10,12,14,15) the game room and TV lounge were both huge hits. My wife and I even got in on the foosball action and had a total blast with the kids. The split-level layout of the villa gave everyone plenty of space to spread out when needed, but also gave a sense of togetherness.

DAY #1 was a private boat tour on a beautiful, 1977 wooden "limo" boat. The pickup pier was about 100 yards from the home, which was SO NICE. Mattia, the driver, took us to some of the most renown and famous villas on our end of Lake Como, and offered history and fun stories about them. At the end of our tour, he dropped us off in the picturesque village of Bellagio, where we shopped, enjoyed lunch, and eventually took the ferry back to Lenno.

When we arrived back to the villa, Chef Daniele and his wife had already been prepping for a cooking class with our family. This was probably the highlight of our stay in Lake Como. The food was amazing and the overall experience of doing something unique as a family was really special.

DAY #2 was overcast and drizzly, which is expected for this time of year. We knew we wanted to visit a centuries old castle across the lake, in Varenna, so we simply grabbed the Inspirato umbrellas, caught the ferry (just down the path) and were on our way. That evening we had a taxi take us down the coast to the historic Grand Hotel Tremezzo for dinner. This hotel was absolutely stunning. We felt like we were on the set of a 1950's movie. If you visit this part of Lake Como, you absolutely must visit the 2nd floor bar / restaurant and order a Smoked Negroni.

That evening, we watched Casino Royale as a family, which has a scene filmed at the historic Villa del Balbianello, which is a mansion estate just across the cove from Villa Della Capra, which we were going to tour the next day.

DAY #3 was a travel day, but we walked over to Villa del Balbianello (20min walk from the house) and were there right when it opened. This villa was built in the 17th century and was owned by a famous arctic explorer and businessman, Guido Monzino. It is absolutely magnificent and with it being so close to the Inspirato Villa, you simply must visit.

Overall, the only complaint is that we didn't have more time! There is so much history and beauty in Lake Como. While the weather in the fall was a little cooler, the smaller crowds made the tradeoff worth while. We are looking forward to returning again!

Fabulous oasis on Lake Como

We had the most wonderful stay at Villa Della Capra with our large family. The villa was sleek and beautifully appointed with everything we needed for a relaxing and luxurious family vacation.

We had the best time in the game room. Most evenings ended with a spirted game of foosball or pool and many laughs. The location of the villa was perfect and we had easy access to every destination we wanted to visit along Lake Como. The town of Lenno is quiet and beautiful with a wonderful Gelateria down the square from the Villa. Another evening favorite!

The highlight of our stay was our incredible itinerary that was planned by Valentina and flawlessly executed by the amazing Monica. Every step was thoughtfully planned and adjusted by Monica at every point along the way. Monica knew what we needed before we did and was always one step ahead of every plan, making sure everything ran smoothly and we had the best possible experience.

The favorite night of our trip was our incredible birthday celebration for my husband. Monica planned an incredible private dinner in the villa for our family of 9 with a remarkable chef and beautiful birthday cake. Monica also presented my husband with an incredibly thoughtful gift which we will all treasure.

We had a fabulous stay at Villa Della Capra and cannot say enough good things about Monica and her amazing team (special shout out to Roberto for taking us all around Lake Como!!). Thank you for the beautiful trip and many memories

A lovely base to explore

We had a wonderful March visit to Lake Como with another couple and 3 teenagers (who loved the game room and TV area downstairs). Lenno is a nice, sleepy location to base your exploration of the area and Monica, the local concierge, is the perfect person to help you plan. We spent our days exploring other towns on the lake, venturing to Lugano, and exploring wineries. Monica smoothly coordinated everything and helped to adjust our plans when we needed to shift or change things. Weather is a little unpredictable in March so flexibility is key. I highly recommend working with Monica to hire a driver as needed and not renting a car. Roads are narrow and it was a relief to not have to navigate things. Also recommend hiring a chef to come to the house and hiring a boat for the afternoon to explore the lak. Monica worked with a local winery to stock the house and we loved the selection of wines. There is a weekly farmers market right near the villa and I wish we would have planned around that and bought food (amazing cheese booths!) to have a nice dinner that night.

Great house but enjoyed other stays in Italy more

The house is one of the best that we have stayed in; cozy, functional, great location, and unique. There is a fantastic game room, which everyone really enjoyed and the dining room and TV rooms were wonderful gathering places for everyone. The only thing you need to be aware of is that the main Primary Bedroom doesn't have A/C so even in the cool weather and with 2 fans, it was a bit uncomfortable. The only Bedroom that has A/C is the Junior Primary Bedroom. I can't imagine how bad it would be in the middle of the hot summer. They should install a split in that room. Lake Como is a nice place but we didn't feel the restaurants were very good, as compared to other Italian cities, such as Tuscany, Florence, Rome, Venice, etc. Bellagio is nice to walk around in but it's more a tourist trap and the shopping isn't very good. If you want to shop, the city of Como is much better. I strongly recommend the private boat tour, the Food & Art Tour in Como and the Cooking Class. Valentina, the Vacation Planner, did a great job but we were disappointed with our Concierge, Monica. She was there the first day to greet 2 of the 6 guests and said she would come back the next day to drop off one of the 3 keys since 1 of them was missing but we never saw her again until the last night. Unfortunately, this meant that the 3 couples couldn't ever leave separately, otherwise the last couple couldn't get out of the gate since a key is required to exit the house. While it wasn't a big deal that she forgot to get any of the bread we requested on the grocery list, it was frustrating when she said that we could pick it up ourselves the next day and sent me a location of a grocery store, even though we didn't have time since it don't wasn't opened when we were available, since we had planned activities. When I complained, she did order bread from a location restaurant but I had to go pick it up since she wasn't planning on coming back to the house. In addition, she was a bit condescending with her comments she made to my daughter that I didn't want to spend extra money on taxi's and I didn't want to pay for an expensive lunch at the Hotel Tremezzo. Also, someone had tried to adjust the A/C because it was warm and we were 'scolded' and that no one should touch the A/C controls. Finally, the Inspirato airport information on the website is incorrect. It says "Milano Malpensa Airport (MXP) is about a 75-minute drive from Casa della Capra, while Milano Linate Airport (LIN) is about an hour away." I don't know why they reference Casa della Capra house, which isn't a house option so it's confusing. One couple flew into LIN based on this information but the accurate information is that LIN is around 1 1/2 hours away and MXP is around 45 minutes away. In addition, their transportation service charges $388 USD (before tax) from LIN and $355 USD from MXP. Overall, we found that the transportation options through Inspirato were a lot more expensive than if we had planned our own transportation. In summary, we really like the house and enjoyed Lake Como but based on the information I provided, it could have been a much better experience. We have been on 6 other Italy trips and we felt the other locations were better. Florence is still our favorite!

Great time and beautiful home well located

I think we gave the planning team a challenge when I said we will stay in Lake Como for 11 days and we need to make every day an adventure. They came through with flying colors and we had amazing trip! From the train ride to St. Mortiz Switzerland to pizza party, in home cooking class and seeing the many small towns surrounding Lake Como it turned out awesome! Monica, the on-site concierge was so special and was like family by the end of the trip! Definitely need a great home if visiting Lake Como!
